Organizational Context
The United Nations ESCAP (UN ESCAP) in Bangkok seeks interns for its Trade Policy and Facilitation Section (TPFS) within the Trade, Investment and Innovation Division. This section provides evidence, training, and policy guidance on trade and trade policy to governments and stakeholders in the Asia-Pacific region, with a focus on development needs.
Job Purpose
This internship offers a learning-by-doing opportunity for individuals to gain direct experience working with professionals on trade and trade policy issues within UN ESCAP. The role contributes to the section's mandate by supporting research, analysis, training, and advisory services aimed at fostering sustainable and inclusive development in the Asia-Pacific region. Interns will engage with contemporary trade topics, assisting in the preparation of policy documents, data analysis, and event organization, thereby enhancing their academic and applied skills in international trade and development.
Responsibilities
Interns will contribute to policy research on contemporary trade issues, including digital trade, e-commerce, global value chains, and trade agreements, focusing on their implications for sustainable development. Key duties involve conducting literature analysis, drafting background documents and policy notes, and supporting the preparation of presentations and training materials. Interns will also assist with data-related tasks, such as identifying sources, collecting and analyzing data, and maintaining databases. Additionally, responsibilities include editing and formatting papers and supporting the organization of regional dialogues, meetings, seminars, and training events.
Work Experience
Work experience is optional for this internship. However, candidates with relevant experience in international trade or development policies, trade-related or international laws, data management, data analysis, programming (e.g., Excel, R, Python), regulatory analysis, or trade agreement analysis may be given priority. Strong drafting and communication skills are also advantageous.
