Organizational Context
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) is a UN regional commission established in 1948 to foster economic and social development. Job Purpose
The Economic Affairs Officer, under the Deputy Chief's supervision, will monitor economic developments in regional integration, trade, urban development, and development finance, focusing on issues relevant to small developing economies in the Caribbean. The role involves conducting research, analyzing macro-economic performance, and providing policy recommendations and advice to senior policymakers and stakeholders. The officer will also design and draft reports on selected economic issues, apply econometric modeling techniques, and organize expert meetings. A key aspect is supporting intergovernmental bodies like the Caribbean Development and Cooperation Committee (CDCC) and representing ECLAC at international forums, contributing to the region's economic and social development through policy analysis and technical cooperation.
Responsibilities
The Economic Affairs Officer will monitor and analyze economic developments in regional integration, trade, urban development, and development finance, identifying emerging issues and drafting policy recommendations for small developing economies. Responsibilities include conducting research and analytical studies, particularly on Caribbean regional integration, and monitoring macro-economic performance with proposals for structural transformation. The role involves engaging senior policymakers, designing and drafting reports on economic issues, and applying econometric modeling. The officer will organize expert meetings, prepare presentations, and provide policy advice to stakeholders. Additionally, the role entails providing substantive support to intergovernmental bodies, representing ECLAC at meetings, designing and monitoring technical cooperation projects, undertaking missions to member states, and supporting junior staff.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in economic research, analysis, and policy formulation is required. Experience in gender-responsive analysis and the use of sex-disaggregated data is also necessary. Desirable experience includes regional integration, trade negotiations, development finance, and proficiency in economic software (e.g., STATA, R, Python) and econometric modeling techniques.
