The African Centre for Statistics (ACS) enhances data production, dissemination, and use to support evidence-based policymaking. This role is within the Data Capability and Geospatial Knowledge Section of the ACS.
Job Purpose
The Senior Statistics Assistant supports the African Centre for Statistics in improving the production, dissemination, and use of quality statistical data across Africa. This role is crucial for enabling evidence-based policymaking, planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Agenda 2063. The incumbent will collect, evaluate, process, and analyze statistical data, prepare datasets and reports, develop software solutions for statistical applications, maintain database systems, and respond to data-related queries. The position also contributes to modernizing statistical production systems using digital technologies and may supervise junior staff.
Responsibilities
The Senior Statistics Assistant is responsible for collecting, evaluating, processing, and analyzing statistical data from diverse sources. Duties include processing and classifying data, ensuring internal consistency, and reconciling discrepancies. The role involves building special datasets for research and reports, and preparing charts, graphs, and other outputs for data presentation. Additionally, the incumbent will develop, test, and implement software solutions for statistical applications, maintain and enhance database systems, and respond to internal and external data requests. Collaboration with UN system organizations for information gathering, preparing datasets, and updating web applications are key functions. The role also supports the modernization of statistical production systems and may involve supervising other general service staff.
Work Experience
A minimum of ten years of experience in statistics, finance, accounting, information technology, or data science/technology is required. One or more years of experience in data analytics is desirable. Experience in database design and management is also desirable.
