Legal Intern
Organizational Context
The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) Office of the Prosecutor in The Hague is comprised of three teams: Core, Appeals/Legal Advisory, and Category II. These teams provide legal counsel, advice on international law, and assistance to national authorities and investigators. Interns support Legal Officers across these teams, contributing to the Mechanism's ongoing functions and international justice initiatives.
Job Purpose
This legal internship within the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in international criminal law. The intern will support Legal Officers in various teams, contributing to critical functions such as legal research, factual analysis, and drafting of legal documents. This role is designed to provide hands-on experience in litigation support, policy development, capacity building, and post-conviction proceedings, offering valuable exposure to the complexities of international justice and the Mechanism's mandate. The internship aims to benefit the United Nations by leveraging the intern's skills and academic background.
Responsibilities
Conduct comprehensive legal research and detailed factual analysis on complex international criminal law matters. Draft legal assistance documents, support litigation efforts, and perform cite-checking to ensure accuracy and adherence to legal standards. Compile and collate relevant materials for ongoing cases and projects. Assist national authorities and investigators in war crimes prosecutions and capacity-building initiatives. Support policy development and contribute to witness protection and post-conviction litigation, including contempt or review proceedings. Provide legal advice on international humanitarian law, international and comparative criminal law, and procedure. Assignments may be received across the Core, Appeals/Legal Advisory, and Category II teams.
Work Experience
No prior working experience is required for the United Nations Internship Programme. However, previous legal experience is considered desirable. Experience in handling sensitive or confidential information is also desirable.
Skills
Computer literacy in standard software applications. Good drafting and oral communication skills. Ability to prepare and draft legal documents. Ability to conduct legal research. Experience with sensitive or confidential information is desirable.
