Organizational Context
The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the UN's focal point for coordinating disaster reduction efforts globally. It guides, monitors, and reports on the Sendai Framework, supporting its implementation and raising awareness. The "Early Warnings for All" (EW4All) initiative, co-led by UNDRR and WMO, aims to protect everyone with early warning systems by 2027. This internship is based in UNDRR's Regional Office for the Americas and the Caribbean in Panama.
Job Purpose
This internship supports the "Early Warnings for All" (EW4All) initiative within the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Regional Office for the Americas and the Caribbean. The role focuses on enhancing multi-hazard early warning systems (MHEWS) by contributing to the development of a regional dashboard for tracking projects and MHEWS components. The intern will monitor regional progress, link it to the global EW4All dashboard, and strengthen private sector engagement, particularly in science, technology, innovation, and AI. This position aims to foster a community of practice and support the overall goal of ensuring universal protection by early warning systems by 2027, contributing to disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation efforts.
Responsibilities
The intern will support the development of a regional dashboard for the Americas and the Caribbean, which will map relevant projects and components of multi-hazard early warning systems (MHEWS). This includes tracking progress within the region and aligning it with the global EW4All implementation dashboard. A key responsibility is to strengthen private sector engagement in the EW4All initiative across the region, with a specific focus on science, technology, innovation, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The intern will also support the creation of a community of practice to facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration among stakeholders involved in early warning systems. These duties contribute to the broader UNDRR mandate of coordinating and advancing disaster risk reduction efforts.
