The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) serves as the UN headquarters in Africa, providing administrative, security, conference, and information services. This internship is within the Information and Communication Technology Service (ICTS), Information Security division, supporting UNEP, UN-Habitat, and the Resident Coordination System globally and other UN offices in Kenya.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide practical experience in information and cyber security operations within the UNON. The intern will support the Information Security Team Lead by assisting in monitoring security dashboards, triaging alerts, analyzing potential threats, and documenting incidents. The role also involves contributing to vulnerability management, security awareness initiatives, and the secure deployment and documentation of network infrastructure, ensuring compliance with UN security policies and standards.
Responsibilities
The intern will primarily assist in Information & Cyber Security Operations (90%), including Security Operations & Incident Response by monitoring security dashboards (SIEM, EDR, Firewalls), triaging alerts, analyzing phishing attempts, and documenting incidents. In Vulnerability & Risk Management, duties include conducting vulnerability scans, tracking security patches, and performing configuration audits. For Governance, Awareness, and Training, the intern will help develop awareness materials, coordinate phishing simulations, update policies, and perform user access reviews. A smaller portion (10%) involves Infrastructure & Physical Security, such as assisting with Wi-Fi deployment, updating network documentation, and ensuring secure decommissioning of ICT equipment.
