Organizational Context
The United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia (UNVMC) requires paramedical support, particularly in remote areas. The position is based in various remote locations across Colombia, with potential for temporary assignments and movement between duty stations.
Job Purpose
The Prehospital Care Technician (PHCT) will provide essential paramedical support to UNVMC staff, acting as a first responder and ensuring 24/7 emergency care availability in remote operational areas. This role contributes to the overall safety and well-being of mission personnel by attending to routine medical needs, managing emergencies, and facilitating medical services. The PHCT will also be responsible for maintaining medical supplies, equipment, and records, and may be involved in training staff on basic medical procedures. The position requires adaptability to various locations and operational demands, ensuring continuity of care and support for mission objectives.
Responsibilities
Provide emergency medical assistance and first response to UNVMC staff. Ensure and facilitate 24/7 in-person emergency care availability in assigned remote locations, including weekends and holidays. Attend to routine medical needs, orienting and supporting staff. Identify, plan, and requisition medical supplies and equipment. Maintain and update records on medical equipment, supplies, maintenance, and waste disposal. Prepare emergency, trauma, and evacuation kits. Conduct medical briefings for incoming staff and update monthly medical reports. Collaborate with the UNVMC Medical Officer and Field Teams on daily and extraordinary activities, potentially involving overnight stays or travel. Participate in Occupational Health and Safety promotion and risk awareness campaigns, serving as an OHS focal point. Support emergency brigade activities and deliver medical-related training as required.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of relevant experience in providing health care services, preferably in pre-hospital, emergency, or field settings, is required. Demonstrated ability to provide emergency medical care in high-pressure environments, apply triage protocols, and manage medical equipment is essential. Experience operating independently in diverse cultural and operational contexts is also required.
