The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) serves as the leading global environmental authority, setting the agenda and promoting sustainable development. The Abidjan Convention Secretariat, based in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, coordinates regional efforts for the protection and management of the marine and coastal environment across the south-eastern Atlantic region.
Job Purpose
This role supports the Abidjan Convention Secretariat in enhancing ecological and socio-economic resilience within the marine and coastal environment of the south-eastern Atlantic region. The Knowledge Management Coordinator will lead regional initiatives, facilitate knowledge exchange, and support the development and implementation of strategies and action plans aligned with the Convention's protocols. The position aims to strengthen regional capacity to address threats such as pollution, climate change impacts, and habitat degradation, fostering cooperation among Contracting Parties and mobilizing resources for conservation and sustainable management efforts.
Responsibilities
Lead and coordinate the implementation of regional initiatives and projects focused on marine and coastal resilience, ensuring alignment with the Abidjan Convention's protocols on pollution control, mangrove management, and integrated coastal zone management. Develop and operationalize a digital knowledge platform for regional knowledge exchange, creating knowledge products, documenting best practices, and lessons learned. Organize regional workshops and technical trainings to foster peer learning and disseminate best practices. Facilitate monitoring of environmental trends, provide policy guidance, and support Contracting Parties in reporting and implementing convention protocols. Strengthen partnerships with regional and international institutions, UN agencies, and development partners to mobilize resources and support coordinated actions. Prepare high-quality technical documents, project proposals, and communication materials, contributing to strategic planning, monitoring, and performance reporting of the Secretariat.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in coastal zone management, marine conservation, climate adaptation, or related areas is required. Experience in regional or international cooperation mechanisms, project development, management, monitoring, and reporting is essential. Experience with coastal communities and regional organizations is desirable.
