Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) hosts the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) in Montreal, Canada. This role is within the SCBD's Scientific, Society and Sustainable Futures Division, reporting to the Head of the Biodiversity, Science, Policy and Governance Unit and the Programme Management Officer.
Job Purpose
This role provides essential programme and project management support to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) processes. It involves assisting in all phases of the project cycle, tracking key decisions, coordinating with donors on financing, and managing budgets and forecasts. The position also supports the implementation of relevant decisions, acts as a focal point for coordination, and resolves administrative issues related to recruitment and procurement. Furthermore, it contributes to research, analysis, documentation, stakeholder engagement, and provides crucial secretariat and logistical support for meetings and activities, ensuring the effective delivery of the CBD's objectives and sustainable development goals.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include providing comprehensive programme and project management support throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring effective delivery of CBD processes. This involves tracking Conference of the Parties (COP) decisions, coordinating with donors on financing, and assisting with budget drafting and reporting. The role serves as a liaison for activity coordination and monitoring, resolving administrative issues for recruitment and procurement. Additionally, it entails researching, compiling, and analyzing information, reviewing submissions, and drafting various documents. Stakeholder engagement includes coordinating communications, assisting with project proposals, and managing documentation. The position also provides secretariat services for meetings, supports event organization, and manages information systems, including databases and web content. Guidance to support staff and performing other assigned duties are also part of the role.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in sustainable development, environmental programmes, environmental law, or public administration is required. This is reduced to five years with a first-level university degree. Five years of experience within the UN or similar international organizations is desirable, as is experience with Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), international environmental policies, and UN rules and regulations. One year of experience in data analytics is also desirable.
