Information Management Intern: Data and Artificial intelligence (AI)

Organizational Context

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), established in 1999, serves as the UN system's focal point for coordinating disaster risk reduction efforts. Based in Bangkok, this internship is within the Information Design and Technology Solutions (IDTS) unit, reporting to the UX Design Lead. UNDRR works globally to implement the Sendai Framework, engaging with member states and diverse stakeholders.

Job Purpose

This internship offers a valuable opportunity to contribute to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) in Bangkok, focusing on data and artificial intelligence. The intern will support ongoing projects by assisting in the design and prototyping of AI algorithms and data analysis models, and contribute to the development of internal tools for data processing and model training. This role is crucial for enhancing AI architecture, deploying machine learning models, and exploring innovative AI technologies to support disaster risk reduction initiatives. The intern will gain practical experience in data analysis, model development, and the integration of AI solutions within a global humanitarian context, contributing to the UNDRR's mission.

Responsibilities

Assist in designing and prototyping AI algorithms and data analysis models for projects like Damage and Losses systems and knowledge hubs. Contribute to developing and enhancing internal tools for data processing, model training, and AI architecture improvement. Support the creation, deployment, and optimization of scalable machine learning models. Conduct research and experiments with advanced AI technologies, including generative AI, deep learning, and natural language processing. Perform exploratory data analysis and data preprocessing for large datasets. Assist in integrating AI solutions into existing workflows and systems. Monitor, evaluate, and document AI project progress and outcomes. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align with organizational objectives.

Work Experience

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. A portfolio of coursework may be requested.

Skills

Proficiency in programming languages like Python. Knowledge of deep learning/ML frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn). Experience with building scalable machine learning models. Familiarity with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud) for AI/ML development is desirable. Knowledge of conversational AI design is desirable. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and in a team. Interest in the UN mission and values.
