Organizational Context
The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) within the Department of Operational Support (DOS) manages the UN Headquarters complex in New York. This role is part of the HVAC Shop within the Mechanical and Plumbing Unit, reporting to the Foreperson. FCAS ensures efficient planning, management, maintenance, and operation of all physical facilities and assets.
Job Purpose
The Heating, Ventilation, and A/C Technician (HVAC) will provide on-site leadership, technical direction, and coordination for junior technicians. This role involves performing complex troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and installation of all HVAC/R systems and related equipment throughout UN facilities. The technician will diagnose faults, conduct field training, communicate technical recommendations, and ensure compliance with UN safety standards and building codes. Responsibilities also include coordinating with other trades, managing material needs, and performing administrative tasks related to work orders.
Responsibilities
Provide daily on-site leadership, technical direction, and coordination for junior technicians and support personnel, assigning and reviewing tasks for proper execution and safety compliance. Respond to calls, schedule Building Management Systems (BMS) for meetings, and ensure client satisfaction with work orders. Perform complex troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and installation of all HVAC/R systems and related equipment, diagnosing electrical, mechanical, and refrigerant faults. Conduct field training for junior technicians and communicate technical recommendations to supervisors. Ensure all work adheres to UN safety rules, technical standards, and building codes. Install, maintain, and repair various HVAC/R equipment. Coordinate with other trades and contractors, review material needs, and initiate requisitions. Perform administrative duties such as creating and closing work orders.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of experience in HVAC repairs and maintenance is required. Demonstrated experience with Building Management Systems (BMS) and complex HVAC control systems, including digital diagnostics and repair, is also required. Five years of experience in a commercial or industrial setting, experience supervising staff, and experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) are desirable.
