Organizational Context
The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) works globally to protect human rights, empower individuals to realize their rights, and assist duty-bearers in upholding these rights. This internship is within the Business and Human Rights Section, contributing to the OHCHR's overarching mission.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to support the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in its core mission of protecting and promoting human rights worldwide. The intern will contribute to the work of the Business and Human Rights Section by conducting research, analyzing thematic and regional human rights issues, and drafting relevant documentation. This role provides an opportunity to gain practical experience in human rights work, support the preparation of meetings and workshops, and assist in other related duties as assigned, thereby contributing to the effective implementation of human rights principles.
Responsibilities
The intern will support the OHCHR's mission by researching and analyzing a broad spectrum of thematic and regional human rights issues relevant to the Business and Human Rights Section. Key duties include drafting and summarizing reports, background materials, and other essential documents. The intern will also assist in preparing for and servicing meetings, seminars, and workshops, which involves creating documentation and drafting notes and reports. Additionally, the intern will perform other related tasks as requested by their supervisor, potentially supporting other OHCHR units as needed, ensuring comprehensive assistance to the section's activities.
Work Experience
No prior work experience is required for this United Nations Internship Programme. However, any previous experience in fields related to human rights, law, political science, international relations, social sciences, or business administration management is considered desirable. Experience working with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights is also advantageous.
Skills
Research and analytical skills, report drafting and summarization, meeting and workshop support, understanding of human rights principles, knowledge of UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (desirable), fluency in English, knowledge of Spanish (desirable).
