Organizational Context
The Statistics Division within the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), a UN regional commission established in 1948, seeks to contribute to the region's economic and social development. This role, reporting to the Chief of the Division, supports the design, monitoring, and evaluation of public policies through data expertise and advisory services to governments.
Job Purpose
The Statistician will be responsible for developing and coordinating methods for economic data collection, ensuring data accuracy, consistency, and timeliness. This includes planning and conducting analytical work programs in various statistical areas such as national accounts, external sector, and short-term statistics. The role involves technical advisory for national capacity building, supervising database development, and leading the International Price Comparison Programme (ICP) within the LAC region. Additionally, the position requires undertaking methodological research, developing statistical models, and organizing seminars to strengthen statistical development and support data-driven decision-making.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include initiating and coordinating the development of economic data collection methods and ensuring data quality. The role involves planning and executing analytical work programs in national accounts, external sector, balance of payments, and other macroeconomic statistics, including providing technical advisory services for national capacity building. The Statistician will supervise the development of statistical databases and software, and lead the International Price Comparison Programme (ICP) coordination within the LAC region. Further duties encompass methodological research on statistical standards, developing new statistical methods and models, organizing workshops, coordinating administrative matters, and managing assigned sections. Analyzing data to identify trends and presenting insights through visualizations for planning and reporting is also a core function.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in statistical data collection, compilation, analysis, and dissemination is required. Experience with national accounts, external sector, prices, and other macroeconomic indicators is essential. Desirable experience includes working with international standards, leading regional statistical programs, and experience within multilateral organizations.
