Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority. Its Asia and the Pacific office implements global programs by fostering regional cooperation. The Secretariat of the Acid Deposition Monitoring Network in East Asia (EANET) is based at UNEP Asia and the Pacific, supporting the EANET work programme. This role is situated within UNEP's Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) in Bangkok, Thailand.
Job Purpose
This Coordination Officer role supports the implementation of the EANET work programme, ensuring quality and facilitating partnerships within participating countries and with relevant regional bodies. The position involves coordinating meetings, liaising with government agencies and institutions, and ensuring EANET's active participation in regional and global initiatives. The role also provides policy advice to integrate EANET issues into UNEP's work and promotes synergies with related air pollution efforts. The incumbent will manage the EANET Secretariat, including its annual work programme and budget, fundraising activities, staff, and financial systems. Additionally, the role is responsible for outreach, reporting, and representing the EANET Secretariat at relevant meetings, including preparing annual reports and policy-relevant publications.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include coordinating the implementation of the EANET work programme, ensuring quality of outputs, and fostering partnerships. This involves organizing meetings for EANET's institutional structures, facilitating liaison between government agencies and partners, and ensuring EANET's contribution to regional and global initiatives. The role also involves providing policy advice and promoting synergies with related air pollution efforts. Management responsibilities include developing the annual work programme and budget, undertaking fundraising, managing the Secretariat staff and operations, and overseeing financial management. Outreach and reporting duties encompass preparing the Annual Report, representing the Secretariat at meetings, producing policy-relevant reports and publications, and utilizing data visualization for reporting and decision-making.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in environmental and sustainable development, specifically air pollution, is required. Experience working with government entities and stakeholders on air pollution issues at country and regional levels, and in intergovernmental negotiations, is also required. Experience within an international or Asia-Pacific regional context, with UN systems, or in managing global partnerships is desirable. Two or more years of experience in data analytics is also desirable.
Skills
Professionalism, communication, and planning and organizing are core competencies. This includes knowledge of environmental theories, problem analysis, judgment, and managing priorities. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential. Strong planning and organizational abilities, including goal setting, resource allocation, risk assessment, and monitoring, are required.
