Intern - Data Analysis and Design
Organizational Context
The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) provides global leadership, operational support, and oversight for the UN Security Management System. It enables the safe and effective delivery of UN programmes in complex environments. This internship is within the Division of Field Operations, specifically the Global Security Information Center (GSIC), which serves as the DSS unified information and crisis hub.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to generate and communicate data-driven analyses and insights to support decision-making processes within the Global Security Information Center (GSIC). The role will enhance UNDSS's effectiveness in supporting UN operations during crises and emergencies by developing and implementing innovative data analysis methodologies and solutions. The intern will contribute to the GSIC's strategic and operational objectives, leveraging data to improve information management, facilitate timely decision-making, and enable coordinated support across the UN Security Management System. This position offers valuable experience in a dynamic organization focused on global peace and security.
Responsibilities
Support the development and implementation of databases, data collection systems, data analytics, and dashboards to optimize process efficiency and data quality. Conduct independent research, analysis, and interpretation of trends and patterns using quantitative and qualitative methods to identify relevant indicators and variables from various data sources. Assist in establishing and managing datasets, including data validation, cleaning, and maintaining databases. Present findings using visualization tools and techniques such as dashboards, maps, charts, and infographics to support data-driven planning and decision-making. Contribute to strategic innovation by applying advanced technologies, including machine learning and Artificial Intelligence. Perform ad-hoc analysis and reporting requests as needed to support the Operational Resilience Section and other assigned duties.
Work Experience
No professional work experience is required for this internship. However, a field of study closely related to data analysis and data science is necessary. Familiarity with standard office applications and the ability to produce well-formatted documents are expected.
Skills
Data analysis, data science, quantitative and qualitative research, analytical skills, forecasting, foresight techniques, knowledge of analytics and presentation tools (e.g., PowerBI, Excel, Tableau, SQL, R, Python, SAS), computer literacy in standard software applications (e.g., MSOffice 365), ability to draft articles and make concise notes. Desirable: proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite or similar, document management platforms.
