Organizational Context
This position is within the Office for Disarmament Affairs (ODA), specifically its Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific (RCPD) located in Kathmandu, Nepal. The Political Affairs Officer reports directly to the Director of the Centre, contributing to ODA's mandate in disarmament.
Job Purpose
The Political Affairs Officer serves as the primary focal point for the Conventional Arms pillar of the UNRCPD's Programme of Work. This role is crucial for leading the Asia-Pacific component of UNODA's project supporting the UN Programme of Action on illicit small arms trade and the Global Framework for Conventional Ammunition Management. The officer will gather, analyze, and disseminate information on political developments, provide expert advice to field missions and UN agencies, and support the implementation of the office's mandates. This position requires maintaining contacts with various stakeholders and utilizing data visualization for informed decision-making and reporting.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include serving as the main focal point for the Conventional Arms pillar of UNRCPD's Programme of Work. The role involves leading the Asia-Pacific component of UNODA's project on preventing illicit small arms trade and managing conventional ammunition. This includes gathering, analyzing, and disseminating information from various sources, staying updated on political events, and providing advice to field missions and UN agencies. The officer will offer technical and substantive support for mandate implementation, liaise with UN sectors, international organizations, and governments, and use data visualization techniques for analysis and reporting. Additional duties as required are also part of the role.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressive experience in political science, international relations, disarmament, or security is required. Two years of experience in small arms and light weapons control and/or ammunition management is also necessary. Experience in the Asia-Pacific region related to weapons and ammunition management or arms trafficking prevention is required. Experience with the UN or similar organizations, and in data analytics, is desirable.
