Organizational Context
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), a regional commission of the United Nations, contributes to the economic and social development of the region. Its mission involves policy design, monitoring, evaluation, and providing advisory services and training to governments. This Senior Economic Affairs Assistant role is based in the ECLAC Office in Bogota, reporting to the Chief of the Office.
Job Purpose
The Senior Economic Affairs Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the substantive work of the ECLAC Office in Bogota. This involves independently identifying and monitoring key aspects of the office's activities, and meticulously collecting, analyzing, and synthesizing data from various documents. The role is instrumental in preparing background materials for studies, briefs, and reports, and in producing analytical and qualitative elements for the office's work program. Furthermore, the assistant will contribute to project formulation and monitoring, organize meetings, liaise with internal and external stakeholders, and draft complex technical texts. This position directly supports the office's mission of contributing to the economic and social development of the Latin American and Caribbean region through policy support and information dissemination.
Responsibilities
The Senior Economic Affairs Assistant is responsible for independently identifying and monitoring substantive aspects of the office's work. This includes selecting and evaluating documents, summarizing pertinent material, collecting and analyzing data, and preparing background materials for various assessments and reports. The role involves assisting in the formulation of project proposals and coordinating their day-to-day monitoring and implementation. The assistant will produce analytical, quantitative, and qualitative elements for official documents and reports. Key duties also include preparing for and assisting in the organization of committee meetings and workshops, drafting agendas, and liaising with internal and external parties. Additionally, the role entails drafting and editing complex technical texts, preparing newsletters, and contributing to a wide range of documents and correspondence. The position may involve field work, providing guidance to junior staff, and assisting with data visualization and updating information materials.
Work Experience
A minimum of ten years of experience in data collection and research in social and economic development is required, reduced to eight years for those with a first-level university degree. Experience in international technical cooperation programs, project management, and providing input for policy design is essential. Experience in data analytics is desirable.
