Organizational Context

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), a regional commission of the United Nations, contributes to the economic and social development of the region. This role sits within the Conference Services Unit, reporting to the Supervisor. Successful candidates will be placed on the ECLAC Roster for Portuguese/Spanish interpretation roles.

Job Purpose

This position aims to provide essential interpretation services for the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). The primary function involves interpreting speeches from Spanish into Portuguese, ensuring effective communication during meetings and conferences. Successful candidates will be added to the ECLAC Roster and may be offered temporary appointments. The role may occasionally involve interpreting for sensitive meetings and potentially leading a team of interpreters, contributing to the seamless execution of international dialogue and policy discussions within the UN framework.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility is to provide simultaneous interpretation of speeches from Spanish into Portuguese. This includes ensuring accurate and effective communication during meetings and conferences. Additionally, the role may involve interpreting for sensitive meetings, requiring a high degree of discretion and professionalism. There is also a possibility of functioning as a team leader for interpreters assigned to a specific meeting, coordinating interpretation efforts and ensuring smooth operations. These duties are contingent upon the specific service, section, and duty station where the temporary position is located.

Work Experience

Experience in booth interpretation is required. At least two years of experience in a language-related position is also required. A minimum of 50 proven days of conference interpretation experience into Portuguese is desirable if a Master's degree or post-graduate diploma in interpretation is not held.
