POLITICAL AFFAIRS OFFICER
Organizational Context
This position is within the Office of the Director for Coordination and Shared Services, supporting the integration and management of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) and the Department of Peace Operations (DPO). The role assists the Director in managerial and policy functions, contributing to the departments' mandates of preventing and resolving conflict through inclusive political solutions and providing direction to UN peacekeeping operations.
Job Purpose
The Coordination Officer (Political Affairs Officer) will provide comprehensive information, contribute to policy documents, and manage the Correspondence Team. This role supports the Director and Under-Secretaries-General by preparing correspondence, acting as a focal point for reports, managing meeting logistics, and monitoring extrabudgetary funds. The position also supports digital transformation and sexual exploitation/abuse initiatives, staying informed on political developments and contributing to policy implementation. A key function is ensuring the integrated operation of DPPA-DPO through effective management of the Correspondence Team, including staff development and adherence to UN editorial standards.
Responsibilities
The role involves independently providing coordinated information and contributing substantive inputs for various policy documents and records. Key duties include preparing and editing correspondence, statements, and political updates for senior leadership. The officer will serve as a focal point for specific reports, manage secretariat functions for meetings, and prepare written outputs like conference reports. Responsibilities extend to monitoring office funds, assisting with outreach and fundraising, and supporting digital transformation and sexual exploitation/abuse initiatives. The position requires staying updated on political developments and participating in policy development and evaluation. A significant aspect is managing the Correspondence Team, including planning work, supervising staff, conducting team meetings, ensuring professional development, and upholding UN editorial standards for all documentation.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressive experience in political affairs, international relations, or management is required. Essential experience includes using Excel for complex budgetary management, supervisory roles, and working on digital transformation initiatives. Experience related to sexual exploitation and abuse issues is also required. Experience in peacekeeping or political matters is desirable.
