The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) serves as the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization (WHO).
Job Purpose
The purpose of this consultancy is to strengthen the analysis and visualization of respiratory virus surveillance data through analytical tools and products that support decision-making and capacity building in countries. The role will also explore the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools for situational analysis, automated synthesis of epidemiological information, signal identification in complex data, and assisted generation of interpretive narratives for technical reports and alerts. The consultant will identify use cases, assess their operational viability, and document recommendations for responsible integration of these tools into the team's workflows.
Responsibilities
Support Data Hub management by weekly uploading FluNet and FluID data to AMART. Develop and implement automated processes for data management and analysis, aligned with epidemiologists' analytical plans. Design, update, and maintain interactive reports and dashboards for key indicator visualization. Provide technical support for efficient use of data analysis platforms and tools. Strengthen national capacities through training on data analysis and visualization product development and use, and educational material management. Support data analysis and statistical modeling in respiratory virus surveillance and operational research projects, including PISA, AMoMo, nowcasting, and forecasting. Assist with proposals, technical reports, and scientific articles related to operational research and data analysis projects. Explore and implement artificial intelligence tools for situational analysis of respiratory viruses, including automating epidemiological information synthesis, assisted detection of signals and trends in complex datasets, and generating interpretive narratives for technical reports and regional alerts. Evaluate the relevance and operational viability of AI use cases within the surveillance team, document applied methodologies, and formulate recommendations for their responsible integration into existing workflows.
Work Experience
Essential: Minimum 7 years of experience in data management and analysis, and in developing automated reports, dashboards, and visualization products for epidemiological or public health analysis.
Skills
Advanced experience in data modeling and relational databases (SQL). Expert proficiency in R and Shiny for analysis and dashboard development. Advanced proficiency in Excel and Microsoft solutions.
Required Languages
Excellent command of English or Spanish, both oral and written, and working knowledge of the other language.
Desired Languages
Working knowledge of French and/or Portuguese.
