Organizational Context

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) serves as the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Job Purpose

To support various areas within the Organization in relation to environmental determinants of health and climate change.

Responsibilities

Provide technical assistance to national institutions and organizations on environmental health determinants and climate change. Advise the Representation and relevant Area Coordinator on environmental health determinants and climate change. Participate in developing proposals for resource mobilization related to environmental health determinants and climate change. Support the implementation of regional initiatives relevant to the country and provide technical support and follow-up on national commitments regarding environmental health determinants and climate change. Actively participate in regional, sub-regional, and national meetings to facilitate the development of environmental health determinants and climate change programs. Contribute to the development of sectoral and intersectoral actions related to environmental health determinants and climate change in the country. Support the office's participation in inter-agency activities related to health and environment. Collaborate on the implementation of the UNASALUD initiative. Support the implementation of the toxicology institute in the Dominican Republic. Strengthen local capacities of community leaders and health personnel in prioritized provinces on environmental health. Provide support for implementing environmental health actions within the KOICA project 'Strengthening of Primary Care in Maternal and Child Health in Provinces of Dajabón and Elias Piña'.

Work Experience

Essential: Minimum 7 years of work experience in environment and/or health. Experience working with the Ministry of Health, government organizations, or academic institutions. Desirable: Experience in international technical cooperation organizations.

Skills

Excellent Spanish language skills, with knowledge for working in English. Proficiency in computer packages (Windows, Microsoft Office, email, Outlook, Internet, and basic statistics). Experience with virtual platforms (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Webex). Skills and experience in preparing technical reports and documents. Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams, assume collaborative leadership, and develop shared tasks. Theoretical and practical knowledge in areas of competence, including integrated approaches and other health topics. Good knowledge of the national health system, the health sector in general, and related sectors. Familiarity with the political, socioeconomic, and cultural situation of the Dominican Republic and the Region. Knowledge of the technical cooperation policy-strategic framework of PAHO/WHO and the UN System.
