Organizational Context
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) serves as the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization (WHO). The Department of Social and Environmental Determinants for Health Equity (DHE) oversees work in climate change and environmental determinants; health promotion and social determinants, including health legislation; equity, gender, human rights, and cultural diversity. The Office of the Assistant Director (AD) manages and coordinates the Closing the Gaps in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Project, supported by the Government of Canada.
Job Purpose
To provide guidance on gender equality and health equity mainstreaming within the Closing the Gaps in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Project, supporting PAHO's Strategic Plan and international development priorities.
Responsibilities
Develop a work plan to strengthen gender equality and health equity at the country level. Report on work plan progress. Provide comments on Annual Work Plans. Participate in monitoring exercises and provide comments on progress reports. Produce a final report on the work plan. Review activities and materials for gender responsiveness. Build capacity among PAHO country office staff and partners on core themes. Apply the PAHO Health Equity Tool. Strengthen communications and knowledge products through gender- and culturally sensitive messaging.
Work Experience
Nine to eleven years of progressively responsible experience in gender equality, cultural diversity, and health equity analysis, research, training, or advocacy in Latin America and the Caribbean. Demonstrated experience integrating gender equality, cultural diversity, and intersectional approaches in project activities. Experience working in international organizations. Experience leading workshops, consultations, or dialogues on gender, health equity, cultural diversity, social class, and intersectionality. Experience and knowledge applying the PAHO Health Equity Tool (HET) or similar tools.
Skills
Strong knowledge of social sciences, inequality, gender, health equity, and intersectionality. Strong written and oral communication skills for international organizations. Drive for results, capacity to communicate in culturally diverse contexts, strong teamwork and interpersonal skills. Ability to analyze and synthesize information using quantitative and qualitative techniques. Accountability, knowledge and information management. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Outlook).
Required Languages
Fluency in spoken and written English and Spanish.
