Migration and Development Intern
Organizational Context
Established in 1951, IOM is a UN-related organization and the leading UN agency for migration. It collaborates with governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental partners to promote humane and orderly migration, save lives, protect people on the move, and facilitate regular migration pathways. The Internship Programme attracts students and graduates interested in migration-related activities.
Job Purpose
This internship within the Migration and Development Unit aims to attract talented students and graduates with a specific interest in migration. The intern will support the daily activities of the unit under the supervision of the Head of Unit, contributing to IOM's mandate of promoting humane and orderly migration. This role provides an opportunity to gain practical experience in migration management, development initiatives, and international cooperation, aligning with IOM's mission to assist governments and migrants. The position is designed to offer hands-on experience in a dynamic international environment, supporting key IOM programs and operational needs.
Responsibilities
The intern will support Migration and Development (M&D) Focal Points and the M&D Unit in areas such as Diaspora Engagement, Migration Mainstreaming, private sector engagement, and circular migration. Responsibilities include following up on contacts and activities with migrants’ associations and stakeholders, assisting in data collection for M&D activities, and supporting the organization of project events like workshops and training sessions. The intern will also track relevant statistics and research, assist in data analysis and presentation for reporting and briefings, and help develop M&D visibility materials. Administrative support for the M&D team and other assigned tasks by the supervisor are also included.
Work Experience
Less than two years of relevant working experience is required. Experience working with migrants and diaspora is beneficial. Prior experience with UN organizations, international humanitarian organizations, or governmental/non-governmental institutions in a multicultural setting is considered an advantage.
Skills
Working knowledge of English and Italian (oral and written) is required. Competencies such as teamwork, delivering results, knowledge management, accountability, and communication are expected.
