Organizational Context

IOM, a UN-related organization established in 1951, promotes humane migration. In Greece, it operates five Accommodation Centers for Unaccompanied Migrant Children (UMC), providing essential services including interpretation. This role supports project activities within the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund 2021-2027, operating under the direct supervision of the Shelter Coordinator.

Job Purpose

This role is crucial for supporting the operational activities within IOM's Accommodation Centers for Unaccompanied Migrant Children (UMC) in Greece. The primary purpose is to ensure effective communication and facilitate integration for the UMC by providing essential interpretation and translation services. By bridging language barriers between UMC, IOM staff, service providers, and public authorities, the interpreter will help UMC understand their environment, access necessary support, and navigate interactions with local bodies. This function is vital for the well-being and successful adjustment of vulnerable minors, contributing directly to the project's objectives under the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund.

Responsibilities

The Interpreter will facilitate effective communication between IOM staff and Unaccompanied Migrant Children (UMC) through interpretation and translation services. This includes assisting with communication in spoken or written language understood by the UMC, and acting as a cultural mediator to aid their adjustment to a new environment. The role involves providing information to staff to better comprehend migrant perceptions and assisting with interpretation between UMC and health providers. Additionally, the Interpreter will translate information materials for UMC and facilitate communication between minors and public authorities, services, and local bodies. The position may also involve performing other assigned duties as required.

Work Experience

Previous relevant professional experience, certification, or training is desirable. Experience in direct assistance to migrants and/or refugees is preferred. Working in a multicultural environment is considered an advantage.

Skills

Fluency in Arabic (written and oral) is required. Working knowledge of Greek or English or French is also required. Computer literacy in standard software applications (MS Office, etc.) is desirable. Willingness to work flexible shifts, including nights, holidays, and weekends, is necessary. A valid driver's license with at least five years of driving experience is an advantage.
