Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is committed to fostering a respectful, inclusive, and supportive work environment. This project addresses urgent humanitarian needs for populations affected by an earthquake in Colombia, focusing on providing vital humanitarian assistance and strengthening the protection environment. The role is under the general supervision of the Chief of Programs and direct supervision of the Protection Coordinator.
Job Purpose
This role is crucial for implementing community protection activities in affected areas and temporary shelters, aiming to strengthen local protection mechanisms and community networks. The purpose is to ensure affected populations access safe, dignified, and timely humanitarian assistance. This involves identifying individuals at risk, referring them for specialized attention, and disseminating information on rights, services, and available support routes. The position contributes to the overall project goal of providing essential aid and enhancing the protection environment for earthquake-affected populations, promoting accountability to affected people, and ensuring timely, equitable, and evidence-based assistance delivery.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include implementing community protection activities in affected communities and temporary shelters, and strengthening local protection networks. The role involves supporting community monitoring of protection risks, promoting access to information on rights and services, and facilitating community participation and feedback. Identifying individuals at risk and referring them to the case management team is essential. This includes conducting information sessions on rights and available services, disseminating information on gender-based violence, child protection, and other specialized services. The position requires participating in community visits, identifying emerging risks, and reporting them to the protection team. Organizing meetings with community leaders and local organizations, and supporting the creation or strengthening of community protection mechanisms are also key duties. Additionally, the role involves disseminating key prevention messages on violence, exploitation, and trafficking, and collecting information on barriers to accessing services and community needs.
Work Experience
Required experience includes working in protection programs, case management with vulnerable populations, community protection, and participation. Experience with social organizations, humanitarian actors, emergency response, and populations affected by displacement, migration, conflict, or natural disasters is valuable. Knowledge of Colombian protection pathways and experience with Psychological First Aid (PFA) are also beneficial.
Skills
Proficiency in case management, including organizing and processing case files. Strong interviewing and form-filling skills for data collection. Effective verbal and written communication. Intercultural sensitivity and professional integrity. Ability to work collaboratively in a team and maintain confidentiality and data protection. Attention to detail in high-volume contexts and proactive reporting are essential.
