Organizational Context

The role sits under the direct supervision of the Protection Coordinator.

Job Purpose

This role is crucial for providing vital humanitarian assistance and strengthening the protection environment for populations affected by the earthquake in Colombia. The objective is to ensure affected populations access safe, dignified, and timely humanitarian aid, including emergency shelter, accommodation support, primary healthcare, and essential household items. The position will involve identifying and assisting individuals with specific protection needs, enhancing access to available services for vulnerable populations, and coordinating with national and local authorities, civil society, and humanitarian actors to ensure a comprehensive and evidence-based response. The role contributes to the project's overarching goal of ensuring safe and dignified access to humanitarian assistance.

Responsibilities

The Senior Protection Assistant will coordinate the daily implementation of project protection activities, guiding territorial staff according to work plans and standard operating procedures. This includes maintaining articulation with national and territorial authorities, civil society, and humanitarian actors. The role involves technically supervising the identification, assessment, management, referral, and follow-up of individuals with specific protection needs, ensuring case management and referrals are conducted safely, timely, and confidentially. Responsibilities also include coordinating protection monitoring, analyzing collected information to prepare alerts and recommendations, and reviewing the quality of case files and reports. The assistant will coordinate complementary protection assistance, support family tracing and reunification, and strengthen capacities of territorial teams and community structures through technical guidance and training. They will monitor activity progress, contribute to project reporting and risk management, and represent IOM in coordination spaces. Promoting accountability to affected populations and ensuring feedback mechanisms are accessible are also key duties.

Work Experience

Experience is required in protection programs, case management with vulnerable populations, community protection, and working with social organizations and humanitarian actors. Experience in emergency/disaster response, with displaced or affected populations, and knowledge of Colombian protection pathways are essential. Familiarity with Psychological First Aid (PFA) is also beneficial.
