Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Egypt, an agency of the United Nations, focuses on promoting humane and orderly migration. The Immigration and Border Governance (IBG) Unit specifically supports Egyptian governmental authorities in enhancing border management capabilities through capacity building, equipment provision, and policy support. This Project Assistant role provides crucial technical and administrative support to the IBG program.
Job Purpose
The Project Assistant for Immigration and Border Governance (IBG) plays a vital role in supporting IOM Egypt's efforts to strengthen border management capacities. Working under the guidance of program officers, this position provides essential technical and administrative support to the IBG thematic program. The role contributes to the implementation of various IBG activities, including those related to Search and Rescue (SAR), Integrated Border Management (IBM), border control, trade facilitation, and international cooperation. By assisting with defined support tasks, the Project Assistant helps ensure the effective and efficient delivery of IOM's mandate in promoting humane and orderly migration and supporting national authorities in Egypt.
Responsibilities
The Project Assistant will be responsible for assisting in the implementation and monitoring of IBG project activities. This includes compiling and drafting various documents such as correspondences, memoranda of understanding, and cooperation plans. The role involves coordinating administrative aspects of project implementation, liaising with internal and external parties, and processing administrative actions. Logistical arrangements for meetings and capacity-building activities will be managed, including preparing presentations and training materials. The assistant will also provide informal translation and interpretation between Arabic and English, compile inputs for project and donor reports, and respond to general information requests. Maintaining files and records, and performing other assigned duties are also key responsibilities.
Work Experience
Experience is required in liaising with governmental authorities, national/international institutions, UN agencies, and NGOs. Experience supporting Immigration and Border Governance (IBG) projects is beneficial. Prior work in international humanitarian organizations or a multicultural setting is advantageous. Basic knowledge of border management concepts, SAR, IBM, or countering cross-border crime is a plus. Experience in developing training plans or SOPs, and in supporting donor project management (programmatic and financial) with IOM or a UN agency, is also desirable.
Skills
In-depth knowledge of migration-related subjects and human rights. Understanding of UN and bilateral donor programming and humanitarian response in border management. Familiarity with Integrated Border Management (IBM), trade, and development concepts. Skills in project management, event management, and the ability to provide briefings in English and Arabic.
