Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN agency established in 1951, promotes humane and orderly migration. It operates five Accommodation Centers for Unaccompanied Minors (Shelters) in Greece, providing essential services like accommodation, basic needs, legal and psychosocial support, and educational programs. This role supports the operation of the K.F.A.A. Thessaloniki shelter under the Greece Programme - Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund 2021-2027.
Job Purpose
The Caregiver role is crucial for the daily operations and well-being of Unaccompanied Migrant Children (UMC) residing in the IOM Accommodation Center in Thessaloniki. The purpose of this position is to provide direct assistance, care, and support to UMCs, ensuring their basic needs are met and facilitating their access to essential services. This includes guiding them in personal hygiene, cleanliness, and home economy, managing essential supplies, and overseeing the upkeep of the shelter facilities. The Caregiver will also play a key role in maintaining a safe and secure environment, managing crisis situations, and coordinating with relevant staff and authorities to ensure the protection and welfare of the children under IOM's care.
Responsibilities
The Caregiver will assist in the daily operations of the accommodation center, ensuring the implementation of individual daily programs for beneficiaries in collaboration with the social worker. This includes escorting children to social and medical services as needed. The role involves guiding beneficiaries in personal hygiene, cleanliness, and home economy, and updating the coordinator on material needs for timely replenishment. The Caregiver will oversee the maintenance of equipment and facilities, educate minors on their respectful use, and maintain records of entries and exits. They must handle crisis and emergency situations effectively, notifying relevant staff promptly, and communicate with local authorities regarding safety concerns. Ensuring the security of accommodated children on 24-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, is a primary duty. The role also includes performing other assigned duties.
Work Experience
Experience or training in child protection, vulnerability management, or reception of asylum seekers/beneficiaries of international protection is required. Familiarity with direct assistance to migrants, refugees, and children is essential. Experience in a similar role, with diverse populations, in a multicultural environment, and willingness to work shifts, including holidays and weekends, are preferred. A valid driver's license with at least five years of experience is an asset.
