Project Associate
Organizational Context
IOM, established in 1951, is the leading UN agency for migration, promoting humane and orderly migration globally. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, IOM addresses a complex humanitarian crisis marked by conflict, epidemics, and climate shocks, which have caused widespread displacement and exacerbated mental health issues. The organization provides multi-sectoral humanitarian and recovery responses, including mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) services, working with government bodies and other partners to strengthen national mental health systems, particularly for vulnerable populations.
Job Purpose
The Project Associate will provide essential administrative, operational, and project support to the implementation of a five-year initiative (2025-2029) aimed at improving living conditions and mental health psychosocial support for populations in critical security contexts in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This role is crucial for the successful execution of the project, which is financed by the German Development Bank (KfW) and mandated by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Working under the direct supervision of the MHPSS Project Officer in Kalemie and general supervision of the MHPSS Programme Coordinator in Kinshasa, the Project Associate will contribute to strengthening mental health systems and providing vital support to migrants, internally displaced persons, returnees, and host communities affected by the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Responsibilities
The Project Associate will manage financial tasks, including processing payment requests, maintaining records of financial documents, and following up on payment statuses with the Finance Team. Logistical support will involve assisting MHPSS Teams with travel arrangements for field visits and collaborating with the Logistics Unit on the procurement and distribution of equipment and supplies. The role includes assisting in the implementation of various project activities such as community consultations, reintegration programs, infrastructure rehabilitation, training, and awareness-raising campaigns. The Associate will also support monitoring and evaluation activities, including data collection and reporting, and maintain communication with provincial and local project partners. Additionally, the position involves assisting in the preparation of regular project reports and performing other related tasks as assigned by management.
Work Experience
Experience is required in assisting with project implementation, particularly in areas such as health, mental health, stabilization, democratic dialogue, or community mobilization. Experience in supporting community reintegration projects, especially those focused on mental health and psychosocial support, is also necessary. Familiarity with ex-combatant reintegration programs and the specific intervention areas and local context is considered an asset.
Skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office. Ability to apply specialized technical knowledge in project implementation. Skills in coordinating activities with partners. Ability to work effectively with local authorities, stakeholders, beneficiaries, and the community. Knowledge of project implementation, monitoring, and reporting.
