Organizational Context

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN-related agency established in 1951, promotes humane and orderly migration. IOM operates five Accommodation Centers for Unaccompanied Minors (Shelters) in Greece, providing essential services including accommodation, basic needs, legal counseling, psychosocial support, and educational programs. This role supports a project within the "Greece Programme - Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund 2021-2027" in Patras.

Job Purpose

The Social Worker will be responsible for the orderly operation of an assigned Accommodation Center for Unaccompanied Migrant Children (UMC). This role is crucial for ensuring the well-being and development of UMC by facilitating access to essential services, providing psychosocial support, and assisting in their transition towards autonomy and adulthood. The position operates under the "Greece Programme - Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund 2021-2027" and contributes to IOM's mission of supporting people on the move by providing a safe and supportive environment, addressing their immediate needs, and guiding them towards future opportunities within Greece.

Responsibilities

The Social Worker will manage the assigned Accommodation Center, including taking social histories of unaccompanied children and facilitating their access to community services, social programs, and vocational training. Responsibilities include organizing individual and group support sessions to address challenges and meet children's needs, fostering their social network through community partnerships, and supporting their gradual autonomy. The role involves monitoring health and vaccination schedules, referring children for medical care, and acting as a primary case worker. This includes conducting Best Interest Assessments, maintaining individual child files, collecting necessary documentation, and supporting children during entry and throughout their stay. The Social Worker will also inform and train children on abuse prevention and safety, prepare them for departure, and assist with general center activities like escorting children and distributing essential supplies.

Work Experience

A minimum of one year of relevant experience is desirable. Previous experience working with children is considered an asset.

Skills

Excellent communication and negotiation skills, personal commitment, efficiency, and flexibility. Ability to work with minimal supervision and under difficult conditions. Good computer literacy. Willingness to work flexible hours, including shifts, holidays, weekends, and emergencies. A valid driver's license with at least five years of experience is advantageous.
