Organizational Context

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), established in 1951, is a leading UN agency promoting humane and orderly migration. It works with partners to save lives, protect people on the move, and facilitate pathways for regular migration. This role operates under the supervision of the Resource Management Officer and Supply Chain Officer in Bujumbura, supporting IOM's mission.

Job Purpose

The Driver's primary purpose is to ensure the safe and cost-effective transportation of IOM staff and authorized goods within cities and to field locations. This role is crucial for the operational efficiency of the IOM office in Bujumbura, enabling staff to carry out their duties effectively and securely. By maintaining the assigned vehicle and adhering to all safety regulations, the Driver directly contributes to the smooth execution of IOM's programs and the protection of personnel and assets. The position requires a high degree of responsibility in managing vehicle maintenance and ensuring timely and secure transit.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include operating assigned IOM vehicles for staff and goods transport, ensuring daily roadworthiness through regular checks, and managing minor repairs and cleanliness. The Driver will maintain vehicles according to service intervals and keep an inventory of spare parts. They are responsible for identifying the safest and most efficient routes, ensuring vehicle use is strictly for authorized purposes, and meticulously preparing daily log sheets and monthly reports on mileage and fuel consumption. Confidentiality and security awareness are paramount, requiring the incumbent to mitigate potential threats. Additional duties involve meeting personnel at airports, handling mail and document delivery, and providing basic clerical support when needed.

Work Experience

Required experience includes a strong knowledge of driving rules and regulations, experience operating various makes and models of vehicles, and proficiency in performing minor vehicle repairs. Familiarity with radio, email, and telephone applications is also necessary for effective communication and coordination.

Skills

Essential skills include knowledge of road safety regulations and UNDSS security procedures, preventive vehicle maintenance, and basic mechanical troubleshooting. Competencies in fleet logbook management, fuel consumption tracking, and vehicle inspection are required. The ability to drive different vehicle types, plan routes effectively, and ensure the safe transport of staff and goods is crucial. Basic computer skills for email and navigation applications are also necessary.
