Laboratory Technologist

Organizational Context

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN-related agency established in 1951, promotes humane and orderly migration. This role is based in Kathmandu, Nepal, within the Migration Health Division. The Laboratory Technologist will provide technical support for laboratory services related to Migration Health Assessments and other IOM programs, reporting to the Chief Migration Health Officer and Senior Laboratory Technologist.

Job Purpose

The Laboratory Technologist's primary purpose is to provide essential technical support to laboratory services within IOM's Migration Health Division in Kathmandu, Nepal. This involves performing a range of laboratory procedures for Migration Health Assessments (HAP) and other programs, ensuring accurate, efficient, and timely delivery of results. The role contributes to the overall quality and effectiveness of IOM's health assessments by maintaining high standards in laboratory operations, quality control, and biosafety. By supporting the laboratory's functions, the incumbent plays a crucial part in IOM's mission to assist governments and migrants, save lives, protect people on the move, and facilitate pathways for regular migration.

Responsibilities

Perform pre-examination, examination, and post-examination laboratory procedures using standard equipment. Contribute to the implementation and maintenance of laboratory quality management systems, potentially serving as a focal point for specific quality system essentials. Ensure adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and biosafety measures for personal and collective safety. Organize and operate assigned laboratory stations for accurate and timely results. Conduct and document quality control and assurance activities. Facilitate the maintenance of laboratory equipment and monitor sufficient stock of consumables. Report operational issues, including equipment, stock, and biosafety concerns, to the supervisor. Maintain organized record-keeping and information management systems for timely reporting and data analysis. Assist in developing or updating SOPs and participate in service system improvements. Manage client expectations by prioritizing needs and providing services with respect for patient dignity and beneficence. Ensure compliance with IOM instructions and mandatory training.

Work Experience

Requires three years of relevant clinical laboratory experience for Bachelor's degree holders or five years for diploma holders, preferably in a busy laboratory setting. Experience should include clinical laboratory techniques, quality management systems, and biosafety principles. Proficiency in computer use for data collection and analysis is necessary. Awareness of the laboratory's role in health systems is beneficial.
