Job Purpose
This role is crucial for supporting the response to the 17th Ebola virus epidemic in the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Epidemiologist Consultant will work under the Migration Health Coordinator and Field Coordinator for Preparedness, collaborating closely with government partners. The purpose is to ensure effective health surveillance at entry and exit points, manage collaboration with border health zones, and support epidemiological surveillance of mobile populations. The consultant will represent IOM in local coordination mechanisms and contribute to the overall preparedness and response efforts against epidemic-prone diseases.
Responsibilities
The Epidemiologist Consultant will directly supervise emergency health interventions, including planning and implementing project activities and overseeing health teams at IOM-supported points of entry/control. Responsibilities include training provincial and local partners for quality control, coordinating with other response experts for integrated migration health interventions, and conducting field assessments to provide technical support and propose improvements. The consultant will ensure accurate reporting to incident management and national health information systems, analyze epidemiological data, and develop regular reports. They will also collaborate on developing emergency preparedness training programs, prepare response-specific communications and reports, and represent IOM in coordination meetings. Identifying opportunities for experience sharing on epidemic preparedness for border points and conducting field evaluations are also key duties.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in epidemiological surveillance, with a focus on epidemic response, is required. Proven experience in epidemic responses, particularly in Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), is desirable.
Skills
Knowledge of public health, specifically epidemiological surveillance. Ability to work in a multicultural, multilingual, and multidisciplinary environment. Proficiency in French and English is required.
