Organizational Context

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN-related agency established in 1951, facilitates humane and orderly migration globally. The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Department provides essential digital solutions, including AI capabilities, to support IOM's mission across over 170 country offices. This internship is within the ICT Department, focusing on AI integration.

Job Purpose

This internship aims to attract talented students and graduates interested in migration and technology. The role supports the ICT Department in exploring, developing, and integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities into IOM's business processes and enterprise applications. The intern will assist in identifying opportunities for AI and automation to enhance efficiency, security, and service delivery for migrants and communities worldwide. The position contributes to IOM's digital transformation agenda by fostering the responsible adoption of emerging technologies and strengthening organizational resilience through data-driven decision-making and innovative digital solutions.

Responsibilities

The ICT AI Intern will support the identification of AI opportunities by analyzing existing applications and workflows for repetitive tasks suitable for automation. Responsibilities include drafting AI use case descriptions, maintaining a log of identified cases, and participating in requirements gathering. The intern will assist in designing and building AI prototypes, developing simple AI solutions like conversational assistants and document summarization tools, and configuring Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) scenarios. Additionally, the role involves supporting AI-assisted development, automating internal ICT tasks, testing AI outputs for accuracy, and contributing to knowledge sharing through documentation and presentations on AI use cases and pilot results. The intern will also research emerging AI tools and practices relevant to IOM's context, ensuring adherence to data protection and AI ethics policies.

Work Experience

Previous experience within the United Nations system, an international organization, or a non-governmental organization is beneficial. Interns are generally expected to have less than two years of relevant working experience.

Skills

Practical programming exposure (Python, JavaScript); familiarity with generative AI tools (LLMs, prompt design, RAG); exposure to cloud services (Microsoft Azure) or low-code/no-code platforms (Microsoft Power Platform); familiarity with SharePoint or content management systems; basic programming knowledge; excellent writing and communication skills.
