Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), established in 1951, is a UN agency dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration. It supports governments and migrants by saving lives, protecting people on the move, resolving displacement, and facilitating regular migration pathways. This role contributes to IOM's mission by providing essential mental health evaluations.
Job Purpose
This consultancy focuses on providing crucial mental health evaluations for referred clients, both in-person and via tele-consultation. These evaluations are integral to immigration medical examinations, resettlement processes, and assisted voluntary return and reintegration activities. The consultant will assess potential psychiatric conditions, including disorders, cognitive impairments, and substance misuse concerns. The primary purpose is to offer professional opinions on diagnosis and classification, provide recommendations for travel requirements, and suggest necessary treatment or stabilization interventions, all documented in comprehensive reports. This role directly supports IOM's commitment to the well-being of individuals affected by migration.
Responsibilities
Conduct psychiatric evaluations for referred cases involving mental health disorders or suspected substance misuse, adhering to established guidelines. Accurately classify identified conditions using the DSM classification, particularly for U.S.-bound refugee populations. Provide written recommendations for follow-up and case management, including treatment and clinical intervention plans. Determine fitness-to-travel for each patient, documenting any special travel requirements and support needed. Prepare comprehensive written reports detailing patient history, clinical findings, diagnostic conclusions, and recommendations. Ensure timely completion of evaluations and high-quality reports, with urgent cases addressed promptly.
Work Experience
Requires demonstrated experience in diagnosing and managing a wide range of psychiatric disorders, including severe mental illness, cognitive impairments, and substance-related conditions. Experience with vulnerable populations (migrants, refugees) and conducting fitness-to-travel assessments is highly desirable.
Skills
Familiarity with international health guidelines and DSM Classification is preferred. Proficiency in English (oral and written) is required.
