Organizational Context

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN-related agency established in 1951, promotes humane and orderly migration. IOM operates five Accommodation Centers for Unaccompanied Minors (Shelters) in Greece, providing essential services including legal counseling and psychosocial support. This role is within the "Operation of K.F.A.A. Patra" project, under the "Greece Programme - Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund 2021-2027".

Job Purpose

This Legal Assistant role supports the implementation of project activities within IOM's Accommodation Centers for Unaccompanied Migrant Children (UMC) in Patra, Greece. The primary purpose is to oversee and provide essential legal and administrative support services to UMC, ensuring their rights and legal status are addressed. The role contributes to the overall well-being and integration of these vulnerable individuals by facilitating access to legal counsel, information on asylum procedures, family reunification, and other necessary legal documentation. By ensuring compliance with national and international legal frameworks, the position upholds IOM's commitment to protecting people on the move and facilitating pathways for regular migration.

Responsibilities

Provide individual and group legal advice to unaccompanied minors regarding their rights, obligations, and legal status, tailored to their needs. Organize information sessions on legal rights and procedures, including asylum, family reunification, and relocation. Offer legal assistance throughout international protection requests, family reunification processes, and residence permit applications. Refer cases requiring court appearances or formal legal documentation to appropriate legal support programs. Assist with applications for residence/work permits and other essential legal documents. Maintain accurate records of all legal and administrative actions and ensure timely completion of procedures. Conduct research on legal and contractual matters, ensuring compliance with IOM's constitution. Provide legal information to shelter staff to support the best interests of the children. Collaborate with government authorities on children's cases and ensure proper information management and data confidentiality.

Work Experience

A license to practice law or a certificate of registration in the relevant professional association is required. At least one year of relevant professional experience, ideally within the migrant and refugee context, is advantageous. Experience working in a multicultural environment is also preferred.

Skills

Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). Awareness of Refugee and Immigration Law (national, international, EU regulations). Knowledge of asylum administrative procedures. Strong work ethic and commitment to humanitarian principles. Excellent communication, negotiation, research, writing, and analytical skills. Willingness to work day shifts. Valid driver's license is an advantage.
