Senior Project Associate - Protection (counter Trafficking) (affiliated Contract)

Organizational Context

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), established in 1951, is a UN-related agency focused on promoting humane and orderly migration. IOM Ethiopia prioritizes migrant rights and well-being through a six-pillar intervention approach, including direct assistance, capacity development, and research. The Protection Unit (PXU) collaborates with government and stakeholders to mitigate protection risks and address vulnerable individuals' needs, guided by rights-based approaches.

Job Purpose

The Senior Project Associate - Protection (Counter Trafficking) will support the IOM Ethiopia Protection Unit in implementing specialized protection interventions. This includes counter-trafficking efforts, case management for vulnerable migrants, capacity building for service providers, and facilitating access to protection services through coordination with various stakeholders. The role also involves supporting training initiatives on specialized protection topics, Trafficking in Persons (TiP), Smuggling of Migrants (SoM), and other assistance-related areas. The position requires providing additional support to other protection teams and coordinating with other programmatic units within the mission, ensuring comprehensive protection for migrants in vulnerable situations.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include planning, coordinating, and monitoring counter-trafficking and specialized protection activities. The role involves compiling, analyzing, and presenting data on these activities, managing project budgets, and acting as a focal point for administrative coordination. This includes liaising with internal units and external parties, drafting status reports, correspondence, and project documentation. The associate will organize meetings, workshops, and training sessions, prepare materials, and deliver capacity-building workshops. Responsibilities also extend to responding to information requests, maintaining records, participating in meetings, and liaising with local authorities, partners, UN agencies, and other stakeholders. Monitoring implementing partners, providing inputs for SOPs and concept papers, and potentially supervising other staff are also key duties.

Work Experience

Requires at least four years of relevant professional experience, ideally in counter-trafficking and migrant protection. Experience in coordinating implementing partner agreements, monitoring activities, and providing capacity building is preferred. Familiarity with governmental, non-governmental, and UN agencies, along with case management experience, is advantageous. The role also benefits from experience in organizing events and meetings, strong communication, and the ability to work independently under pressure.

Skills

Excellent communication and strong analytical/report writing skills. Ability to work methodically, meet deadlines, and function with minimal supervision. Awareness of trafficking in persons, smuggling of migrants, migration, and protection issues. Effective teamwork in multicultural environments. Excellent computer and database skills. Good interpersonal and problem-solving abilities.
