Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is a UN agency promoting humane and orderly migration. The Migrant Protection and Assistance (MPA) unit has been active since 2007, supporting migrants transiting through Somalia. This role, based in Nairobi, Kenya, supports MPA's structural interventions in migration governance, assisting in the implementation, communication, and reporting of activities.
Job Purpose
The Policy Associate role supports the implementation of migration governance activities within the Migrant Protection and Assistance (MPA) programme. This position is crucial for assisting in the execution, communication, and reporting of MPA initiatives, working closely with MPA programme staff, partners, and stakeholders from the Federal Government of Somalia. The role contributes to achieving effective migration management and government coordination, aligning with national and international migration frameworks. The Policy Associate will operate under the direct supervision of the National Programme Officer, assisting in the coordination of project activities and ensuring adherence to IOM's rules and regulations.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include assisting in the implementation of project work plans and organizing meetings with stakeholders. The role involves coordinating with the IOM Somalia Office in Nairobi, supporting procurement and financial processes, and maintaining project records. Regular field visits are required to monitor project implementation, document good practices, and address urgent issues. The Policy Associate will also support coordination with other IOM units, assist in drafting periodic reports by compiling progress updates and inputs for reporting requirements, and maintain regular communication with project counterparts to follow up on activities and identify implementation challenges.
Work Experience
Experience is required in supporting project implementation within immigration and border governance programmes, communicating and liaising with government and project counterparts, and organizing/facilitating workshops. Experience in drafting reports in English, supporting procurement and finance processes, and using standard computer applications is also necessary.
Skills
Knowledge of project implementation, monitoring, and reporting approaches. Familiarity with Migrant Protection and Assistance programmes.
