Organizational Context

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is a UN agency promoting humane and orderly migration. The Protection Unit within the Country Office in Honduras leads protection programming for vulnerable populations, including migrants and displaced persons, addressing needs related to GBV, trafficking, child protection, and mental health. The unit works in a complex humanitarian context, delivering integrated services and promoting protection mainstreaming.

Job Purpose

The Protection Case Worker in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, under the supervision of the Senior Protection Case Worker Associate, is responsible for implementing protection programming. This involves conducting individual protection screenings, developing case plans, and providing case management services to identify and address vulnerabilities and risks among migrants and other at-risk populations. The role ensures the delivery of assistance, including referrals to specialized services, and monitors the continuity of support. It also involves coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, maintaining accurate data, and contributing to reporting and assessments to safeguard rights and support durable solutions for individuals on the move.

Responsibilities

Conduct individual protection screenings upon arrival to identify vulnerabilities and risks, including for survivors of GBV, human trafficking, at-risk children, and those with health or psychosocial needs. Develop individualized case plans and provide comprehensive case management services, including follow-up on assistance delivery, monitoring progress, and coordinating referrals to specialized services (consular, health, psychosocial, family tracing). Support coordination with other IOM missions and relevant colleagues on individual case files and multi-mission protection assessments. Assist in implementing safe and dignified post-arrival assistance, ensuring privacy, confidentiality, and informed consent, and coordinating with relevant authorities. Maintain accurate and timely data collection and case notes in IOM’s case management systems, adhering to data protection standards. Assist in preparing reports, summaries, and contributing to protection assessments and monitoring of project indicators. Undertake duty travel for field visits and service monitoring as required.

Work Experience

Experience in protection case management within humanitarian or migration contexts, particularly for vulnerable groups like GBV survivors, trafficking victims, and at-risk children. Experience working with vulnerable individuals with complex needs, including returnees or deported migrants. Experience with referrals and coordination with local protection actors, NGOs, or government services is essential. Experience in programs involving movement operations or with IOM/UN agencies on AVR/reintegration is advantageous.

Skills

Knowledge of IOM and inter-agency protection standards and guidelines, including Case Management Guidelines. Strong interpersonal skills for respectful interaction with individuals facing trauma or complex needs. Proven ability to establish effective working relationships with diverse populations. Teamwork and collaboration skills. Ability to deliver assistance in challenging conditions, demonstrating adaptability and good judgment. Good written and verbal communication skills for case notes and reports. Proficiency in MS Office and case management tools.
