Organizational Context

IOM, established in 1951, is a UN agency promoting humane and orderly migration. IOM Ethiopia's Protection Unit, specifically the Reintegration sub-unit, supports Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) activities. This role contributes to community-based reintegration through technical engineering and WASH expertise for infrastructure and rehabilitation projects, ensuring alignment with IOM standards and community needs.

Job Purpose

This Senior Project Associate (Engineering) role supports the implementation of construction, engineering, and WASH activities for Migration Response Centres (MRCs) and Community-Based Reintegration (CBR) projects in Ethiopia. The purpose is to provide technical expertise in engineering and construction, ensuring that interventions are safe, inclusive, protection-sensitive, and accessible. The role contributes to strengthening national capacities for reintegration, promoting sustainable livelihood opportunities, and addressing community-level needs linked to return migration. The position will assist in planning, monitoring, and reporting on these projects, coordinating with stakeholders, and ensuring compliance with IOM standards and national regulations, ultimately supporting the safe and dignified return and reintegration of migrants.

Responsibilities

The Senior Project Associate (Engineering) will assist in planning, monitoring, and reporting on construction and Community-Based Reintegration (CBR) engineering projects, ensuring compliance with IOM standards, donor requirements, safety protocols, and national regulations. Responsibilities include preparing and reviewing technical designs, drawings, Bills of Quantities (BoQs), and construction specifications, with a focus on gender-sensitive and accessible designs. The role involves conducting regular field visits for quality control and progress monitoring, coordinating with contractors and stakeholders, and managing construction, engineering, and WASH interventions. Community engagement, documentation of all project activities, and facilitating internal coordination with various IOM units are also key duties. The associate will support procurement processes, organize meetings and training sessions, prepare progress reports, and perform other assigned duties.

Work Experience

A minimum of 4 years of experience in construction, engineering, or WASH projects is required. Experience working with international organizations, NGOs, or UN agencies is considered an asset.

Skills

Proficiency in MS Office packages. Demonstrated skills in AutoCAD, ProgeCAD, ArcGIS, and RCD 2000. Ability to adapt technical knowledge to project needs. Strong communication and reporting skills. Ability to work effectively in diverse cultural settings, under pressure, and meet deadlines. Attention to detail and willingness to assist in a busy project environment.
