Job Purpose
This role is crucial for providing essential nursing services to individuals affected by the earthquake in various settings, including communities, temporary shelters, and health facilities. The MHT Health Personnel/Nurse will participate in rapid needs assessments, perform basic clinical assessments, and triage patients to ensure timely and appropriate care. A key aspect of the role involves supporting medical doctors and other health professionals in mobile health teams, identifying public health concerns, and contributing to the early detection of critical health conditions. The position also supports the continuity of essential health services, particularly for vulnerable populations, and promotes vaccination and immunization recovery efforts. Ensuring proper infection prevention and control measures, providing health education, and maintaining accurate patient records are also vital functions, all within the framework of IOM's humanitarian principles and standards.
Responsibilities
Provide nursing services in affected communities, shelters, and health facilities according to standardized protocols and national regulations. Participate in rapid health needs assessments and perform basic clinical assessments, including vital signs and anthropometric measurements. Conduct patient triage, identifying urgent cases and facilitating referrals to specialized services. Support mobile health teams by assisting doctors and other professionals during clinical and community activities. Identify and report public health events, communicable diseases, and epidemiological risks. Contribute to the early detection of malnutrition, dehydration, and other priority health conditions. Support the continuity of essential health services for vulnerable populations, including children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities or chronic illnesses. Participate in vaccination campaigns and immunization recovery efforts in coordination with health authorities. Apply and promote infection prevention and control measures and biosafety standards. Offer health education and counseling to patients, ensuring cultural appropriateness. Record patient information accurately and confidentially using established institutional tools. Coordinate with other mobile health team members for comprehensive patient care. Identify individuals with protection needs and activate referral mechanisms. Mentor community health workers and promoters to strengthen their health identification and promotion capabilities. Support the development of educational materials and assist in organizing health service spaces. Participate in emergency response planning and coordination meetings, adhering to IOM's data protection, humanitarian principles, and ethical standards.
Work Experience
Desirable experience in nursing care during humanitarian emergencies, natural disasters, or health crisis response. Experience in triage, community epidemiological surveillance, vaccination, and working with mobile health teams is also desirable.
Skills
Knowledge of humanitarian action principles and architecture. Familiarity with international humanitarian standards (e.g., Sphere Handbook). Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with data collection, monitoring, and reporting tools (e.g., Kobo Toolbox). Ability to apply person-centered, community-focused, and human rights-based approaches in health service delivery. Fluency in Spanish (oral and written). Practical knowledge of English is desirable.
