Job Purpose
This role is crucial for providing essential primary healthcare to children affected by emergencies in Caracas, Venezuela. The MHT Physician/Pediatrician will conduct clinical assessments, diagnose illnesses, provide initial treatment, and manage follow-up care according to national and IOM protocols. A key aspect of the role involves participating in rapid health needs assessments, identifying and managing prevalent childhood illnesses, and ensuring timely referrals for specialized care. The position also contributes to public health surveillance, nutritional screening, and the promotion of essential child health services, including vaccination campaigns, to mitigate the impact of emergencies on vulnerable populations.
Responsibilities
The MHT Physician/Pediatrician will provide primary healthcare to children affected by emergencies, including clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and referral. Responsibilities include participating in rapid health needs assessments in affected communities and temporary shelters. The role involves identifying and managing prevalent childhood illnesses, prescribing medications according to protocols, and contributing to the surveillance of public health events and outbreaks. Nutritional screening and early detection of malnutrition are key duties, alongside referring children with serious conditions or specialized needs. The physician will promote continuity of essential child health services, support vaccination efforts, and provide guidance to caregivers on health and prevention practices. Accurate data recording in institutional tools is required. The role also involves identifying children needing protection or psychosocial support, coordinating with IOM Protection and SMAPS teams, and collaborating with the Mobile Health Team for comprehensive care. Training and technical support to community health workers, mapping of available health services, and participation in emergency response planning meetings are also expected.
Work Experience
Desirable experience includes providing pediatric care in emergency, disaster, or humanitarian crisis contexts. Experience in epidemiological surveillance, vaccination, nutritional risk identification, and managing prevalent childhood illnesses in emergency settings is also preferred. Experience working with mobile health teams, community-based care, or health interventions in urban, peri-urban, or hard-to-reach areas is advantageous.
Skills
Proficiency in humanitarian action principles, inter-agency coordination, and emergency response. Familiarity with international humanitarian standards (e.g., Sphere Handbook). Advanced Microsoft Office Suite skills and digital data collection tools (e.g., Kobo Toolbox). Ability to apply person-centered, community-based, and human rights approaches in health service delivery. Fluency in Spanish is required; practical knowledge of English is desirable.
