The Dakar Regional Office produces print and multimedia content to raise awareness of IOM's work in West and Central Africa, enhancing its role as a leading UN agency on migration issues.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to attract talented students and graduates interested in migration issues to support IOM's communication efforts in West and Central Africa. The intern will contribute to the creation and dissemination of engaging multimedia content, including photography, video, and written materials, across various digital platforms. This role supports the Regional Office's strategy to increase the visibility of IOM's work, promote migrant rights and well-being, and strengthen the organization's position as a key UN agency in the region. The internship provides a practical learning experience in media and communications within an international humanitarian context.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Senior Media and Communications Officer and Associate, the Multimedia Content Associate will support the implementation of IOM's communication strategy in West and Central Africa. Key duties include creating engaging multimedia content (photography, video, storyboards, short formats) for digital platforms. The role involves contributing to the editing and optimization of communication materials such as web articles, social media posts, and human interest stories. Responsibilities also include managing and organizing communication assets (photos, videos, visuals) for reuse, supporting the management of communication tools like editorial calendars and media monitoring files, and collecting/consolidating content from country offices. The intern will assist in daily management of regional digital platforms, ensuring content coherence and visibility, and collaborate with various teams to identify content opportunities and contribute to regional campaigns.
Work Experience
Demonstrated experience, interest, or academic work in media, communication, journalism, digital content, advocacy, international development, humanitarian action, or migration is required. Familiarity with major social media platforms (X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok) and their editorial uses is essential. Basic skills in photography, videography, audio/video editing, animation, or graphic design are advantageous. Interest in migration issues and public information in West and Central Africa is highly desirable.
Skills
Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Excellent organizational abilities, attention to detail, and capacity to manage multiple tasks under deadlines. Creativity, editorial sense, and good judgment in developing communication ideas and content. Ability to work in a multicultural team and communicate respectfully. Good research, analysis, synthesis, and fact-checking skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office. Familiarity with SharePoint, Canva, Adobe tools, social media scheduling tools, or basic analytics dashboards is a plus. Commitment to ethical, accurate, inclusive, and protection-sensitive communication.
