Migration Health Nurse Assistant

Organizational Context

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), established in 1951, is a leading UN agency promoting humane and orderly migration. This role is situated within the Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in Windhoek, Namibia, reporting to the Sub-Regional Health Assessment Program Coordinator and the Migration Health Physician.

Job Purpose

This role supports the Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in Windhoek, Namibia, by assisting with daily nursing activities and providing general information to migrants and refugees. The primary purpose is to ensure the technical requirements of resettlement countries are met through accurate medical examinations, sample collection, and support for various health programs like TB management and infection control. The position also involves assisting nurses with patient identification, history taking, and documentation, ensuring a smooth and efficient health assessment process for individuals on the move. The role contributes to IOM's mission of promoting humane migration by facilitating necessary health assessments and providing essential support.

Responsibilities

Provide general assistance with daily nursing activities in the Migration Health Assessment Clinic (MHAC), including medical examinations, vital signs checks, and sample collection. Support TB management, infection prevention, and pre-departure procedures. Assist with documentation, certification, and information transmission, including the safe transport of samples to the laboratory and timely receipt of results. Offer support and information to migrants regarding health assessments, treatments, and referrals. Aid nurses in patient identification, history taking, biodata collection, and ID verification. Adhere to Health Assessment Programmes' checklists and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), maintaining universal precautions. Assist in managing medical emergencies and chronic cases, arranging specialist consultations. Ensure accurate record-keeping and upload medical reports to required databases. Perform national medical escort duties when needed. Assist with checking medical invoices and managing medical supplies and inventory.

Work Experience

Training or experience in Tuberculosis management, mass immunizations, communicable diseases, laboratory testing, or public health is advantageous. Proficiency in MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Access) is required.
