Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in San Jose, Costa Rica, seeks a Migration Health Nurse to support Assisted Voluntary Returns (AVR) under the GAVR program. This role operates within the Protection Unit, reporting to the Protection Officer and Migration Health Physician, and is crucial for delivering essential health services to migrants.
Job Purpose
The Migration Health Nurse (MHN) is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care and health support to migrants participating in the Assisted Voluntary Returns (AVR) program in San Jose, Costa Rica. Under the supervision of the Protection Officer and Migration Health Physician, the MHN will conduct medical examinations, provide treatment and referrals, offer pre- and post-counseling on medical conditions, and ensure migrants are fit for travel. This role is integral to the AVR medical program, ensuring the health and well-being of migrants throughout their return journey and contributing to the overall success of the GAVR initiative.
Responsibilities
Perform daily nursing activities including medical examinations (vital signs, weight, height, visual acuity), referrals for imaging and laboratory testing, treatment, and referrals. Accompany migrants to medical appointments and provide pre- and post-counseling on related medical conditions, focusing on education, prevention, and management. Manage pre-departure procedures, assess fitness to travel, and ensure accurate documentation and information transmission. Implement AVR medical program checklists and SOPs, maintaining universal precautions. Monitor and maintain pharmacy stock, medical kits, and emergency kits. Prepare administrative reports and program updates. Support mobile missions and assist with pre-departure preparations. Conduct medical escort duties as required, ensuring continuity of care during migration phases. Collaborate with internal IOM departments, external health providers, and NGOs. Collect and share statistical information as per agreed formats. Perform other assigned duties.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of relevant clinical experience is required for Bachelor's degree holders. Experience in patient safety, infection prevention and control, managing medical records, and performing basic nursing procedures is essential. Previous experience with migrant populations or in humanitarian contexts is desirable. Computer literacy in MS Office suite is required.
