IOM
Interpreter (arabic)
Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN-related agency, leads in migration. In Central Greece, IOM implements the 'Helios+' project, collaborating with partners to integrate third-country nationals into Greek society. This involves employability support, language courses, vocational training, and independent living assistance. The Interpreter reports to the Regional Coordinator and Project Assistant (Operations).
Job Purpose
The Interpreter's primary purpose is to facilitate effective communication between IOM staff, project partners, and beneficiaries, particularly third-country nationals, within the 'Helios+' project in Central Greece. This role is crucial for promoting the integration of international and temporary protection beneficiaries into Greek society by overcoming language barriers. The Interpreter ensures that vital information is accurately conveyed, enabling beneficiaries to fully understand and access essential services, participate in Greek language courses, vocational training, and receive support for independent living, including rental subsidies. By providing precise interpretation and translation services, the role directly contributes to the successful implementation of project activities focused on employability support, social cohesion, and inclusion. The Interpreter also plays a key part in building trust and rapport with beneficiaries, identifying their needs, and ensuring their voices are heard, thereby strengthening IOM's support to people on the move and fostering a more inclusive environment.
Responsibilities
The Interpreter is responsible for establishing initial contact and building trust with beneficiaries, providing crucial interpretation and cultural mediation services to ensure effective communication and understanding. This encompasses responding to calls received on the project’s helpline, meticulously identifying and reporting new issues to the Project Assistant (Operations), and accurately recording all interactions in the helpline tracker to maintain comprehensive records. A key duty involves translating various documents and information materials for dissemination to project beneficiaries, ensuring clarity, cultural appropriateness, and accessibility of vital information. The Interpreter also actively assists in mediation activities, maintaining an objective and impartial approach to resolve potential misunderstandings or conflicts. Furthermore, the role requires proactively identifying gaps and barriers that may hinder beneficiaries from accessing the full range of available services, and communicating these to relevant staff. Developing and maintaining positive relationships with beneficiaries, relevant stakeholders, and other humanitarian actors is essential to support adequate implementation and coordination of project activities. General assistance to other project staff during activities at the HELIOS+ Center, Reception Facilities, and other locations, as required, is also a core responsibility, contributing to overall project efficiency.
