The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Ukraine seeks a Communications Specialist to support crisis response and recovery efforts. This role operates under the Chief of Mission and National Communications Officer, coordinating with hub leads and program teams. The position requires regular travel within the Dnipro regional hub area, including field visits to various stakeholders and affected communities.
Job Purpose
The Communications Specialist is responsible for ensuring the effective implementation of IOM Ukraine's communications and outreach strategy, focusing on crisis response and recovery initiatives. This involves developing and executing outreach plans, engaging with implementing partners to ensure visibility of IOM's work, and gathering content from field activities. The role contributes to raising awareness of IOM's interventions and maintaining effective communication with stakeholders, media, and the public. Regular travel to field locations is essential for content gathering, media engagement, and supporting visibility efforts across multiple regions.
Responsibilities
Develop and implement outreach and visibility plans for IOM's response in the designated region, including field visits and stakeholder coordination. Train implementing partners on IOM visibility guidelines and ensure consistent visibility of all IOM activities. Engage in content gathering through field visits, taking photos, preparing press releases, conducting interviews, and drafting human interest stories for various platforms. Prepare observation reports on communications activities, challenges, and lessons learned. Contribute to drafting and editing newsletters, promotional materials, and publications. Lead public awareness campaigns and draft media-related content, including articles and press announcements. Liaise with external content creators and local media. Provide informal translations between Ukrainian and English as needed.
Work Experience
Requires relevant experience in media (print, broadcast, internet), public information, communications, outreach, or visibility activities. Experience in developing content for social media and websites, and preparing various communication products (press releases, stories, briefs) is necessary. Experience working with implementing partners, local authorities, and media is desirable, as is familiarity with international organizations or humanitarian response.
Skills
Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills. Strong knowledge of social media platforms and digital media management. Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling abilities. Capacity to collect, verify, and present information accurately and empathetically. Ability to work professionally with diverse stakeholders. Willingness and ability to travel frequently to field settings. Graphic design, photo, or video editing skills are advantageous.
