Senior Field Security Associate
Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN-related organization established in 1951, promotes humane and orderly migration. The Office of Staff Security (OSS) leads security policy and provides mission support to ensure effective program delivery and manage risks. This Senior Field Security Associate role, based in Pretoria, South Africa, supports the Chief of Mission and the Regional Security Officer in managing security risks and awareness.
Job Purpose
The Senior Field Security Associate provides specialized support to enable IOM's activities in South Africa by assisting the Regional Security Officer with all aspects of security risk management. This includes establishing and maintaining an appropriate level of security awareness within the IOM South Africa office. The role is crucial for ensuring the safety and security of IOM personnel, assets, and operations, contributing to the effective implementation of IOM's mandate to promote humane and orderly migration. The position supports the Chief of Mission in managing security risks to acceptable levels, enabling the delivery of IOM programs and activities.
Responsibilities
Establish and maintain relationships with UNDSS, government agencies, and local security authorities to gather relevant security information. Assist the Chief of Mission (COM) in collecting, updating, and communicating security situation information, including verification for analysis. Support the COM in developing and implementing country-specific security plans, contingency plans, emergency response plans, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Assist in conducting Security Risk Management (SRM) processes and monitoring security measure implementation in coordination with UNDSS. Provide advice on Residential Security Measures (RSM) and emerging threats. Support the Country Office Warden system, ensuring communication operability and timely dissemination of safety and security information. Assist in reporting security incidents and preparing security reports. Support security awareness training and provide security orientations to new personnel. Maintain security files and databases, including contact details for security authorities. Implement and verify security measures, proposing improvements. Assist in investigations and incident follow-up. Liaise with commercial security providers. Perform other assigned duties.
Work Experience
Desirable experience includes work in the humanitarian, public, private, or corporate sectors; security programs, risk assessments, or analysis; operational security risk management, investigations, or physical security; and use of radio communications. Successful completion of the UNDSS Field Security Associate (FSA) course is also desirable.
Skills
Ability to collaborate with senior government security counterparts and stakeholders. Ability to work effectively with colleagues from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including active listening and effective response.
