Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Barbados seeks a Protection Caseworker to support its AVR Component 2 program. This role operates under the Chief of Mission and the direct supervision of the Protection & Liaison Officer, focusing on providing essential protection services to migrants.
Job Purpose
The Protection Caseworker is responsible for conducting individual protection screenings, identifying vulnerabilities, and developing individualized case plans for migrants. This role involves providing comprehensive case management services, including follow-up, referral coordination to specialized services (legal, health, psychosocial), and ensuring the delivery of post-arrival assistance. The Caseworker will also support communication with beneficiaries, maintain accurate data in case management systems, and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure timely and effective service provision. The purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of vulnerable migrants, facilitating their safe and dignified return or reintegration processes.
Responsibilities
Conduct individual protection screenings upon arrival, identifying vulnerabilities and risks, and developing case plans. Provide case management, including follow-up, referrals to specialized services (legal, health, psychosocial, GBV), and monitoring assistance. Assist in implementing safe post-arrival assistance, ensuring privacy and confidentiality, and coordinating with authorities. Communicate available assistance clearly and appropriately to beneficiaries. Maintain accurate data and case notes in IOM's case management systems, adhering to data protection standards. Coordinate with operational staff and protection forums to ensure timely service delivery and escalate operational gaps. Assist in report preparation, protection assessments, and monitoring project indicators. Undertake duty travel as required for field visits and partner coordination.
Work Experience
Experience in protection case management for vulnerable groups (including GBV survivors, trafficking victims, at-risk children) in humanitarian or migration contexts. Experience working with vulnerable individuals, particularly returnees or deported migrants with complex needs. Experience with referral systems and coordination with local protection actors, NGOs, or government services is essential. Experience with movement operations or IOM/UN agencies on AVR programs is preferred.
Skills
Knowledge of IOM and inter-agency protection standards and guidelines, including case management. Familiarity with human rights and international migration law is an asset. Proficiency in MS Office and case management tools like MiMOSA is a strong asset. Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills. Ability to work in challenging conditions, demonstrating adaptability and good judgment.
