Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN-related organization established in 1951, promotes humane and orderly migration. IOM Ethiopia collaborates with the government and partners to support vulnerable Ethiopian migrant returnees annually, providing essential medical care for conditions arising from their journeys. The Senior Medical Associate role is based at the Migrant Transit Centre in Addis Ababa, operating under the Protection Unit.
Job Purpose
The Senior Medical Associate is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all medical assistance provided at the IOM Migrant Transit Centre (TC) in Addis Ababa. This role is crucial in ensuring that vulnerable Ethiopian migrant returnees receive necessary primary and secondary medical care. The position involves managing medical staff, developing and implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for medical assistance, and ensuring the integrity of medical documentation and data management. The incumbent will also contribute to improving the overall health support services, coordinating with referral facilities, and monitoring the work of implementing partners to uphold IOM's commitment to providing humane and effective migration services.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include managing the Medical Assistants' roster, assigning duties, and participating in daily scheduling. The role involves developing and updating medical assistance SOPs for the TC and supervising and training medical staff to ensure compliance. The Senior Medical Associate will analyze tools related to migrant flow and satisfaction, prepare medical forms, and ensure the reception area is well-organized. They will also oversee the completion and transmission of medical documents, prepare monthly statistics on health assessments, and handle correspondence related to medical issues. Participation in health assessment missions, suggesting improvements to internal controls, and supporting the coordination of medical cases with referral facilities are also key duties. Monitoring implementing partners, providing input for SOPs and new projects, and guiding other staff members as assigned are also part of the role.
Work Experience
Experience is required in coordinating administrative, health support, or operational activities, preferably in customer service, health, humanitarian, or administrative settings. Knowledge of data management principles and customer care is essential. High computer literacy in Windows and MS Office, including in-depth use of applications for data collection and manipulation, is mandatory. Experience with medical terminology and records management is advantageous, as is previous work with NGOs or international organizations.
Skills
Proficiency in MS Office applications at an intermediate level is required. Essential skills include effective coordination and organizational abilities in administrative, customer care, and health support services. Analytical skills, excellent communication abilities, and a strong attention to detail for accurate data entry and record keeping are also necessary.
